Jump Shot App Icon

September to December, 2011

Don Turner contacted me after seeing my five minute talk on app icon design at Update. JumpShot app is aimed at concert and festival goers and allows someone to jump with their phone and take a photo at maximum height.

Initially I tried designing the icon to describe how the app is used, showing silhouettes jumping in a crowd. Whilst this was useful to helping potential users understand what the app was for, the detail just gets lost on a small icon.

Seeing as the name of the app was very self-explanatory, I decided to go for more simplified and striking shapes. I also opted for a green colour background. There wasn’t a brand colour that was particularly important to the app, and with the proliferation of blue-background icons (making them hard to stand out in the app strore or on the homescreen) I decided green was a good way to stand out.

Don ended up using the icon on an Android version of the app which you can find on Google Play.
